HULA DOG FARM
KONA, HAWAII

the project:

5,400 sf under roof
Residence, Coffee Plantation
Kona, Hawaii

This complex of parallel walls embraces the flow of earth, air and water on the Big Island. Mauka and makai breezes and clouds travel freely through the project, ensuring constant ventilation and resisting mold. Water trickles into the entry vestibule to feed a koi pond, and an infinity pool and spa extends out towards the horizon. A wine cellar occupies a lava tube adjacent to the garages and workshop, and the earth visibly extends into the house. The expansive copper roof is modelled as a landscape, with mountainous skylights erupting upward to illuminate hot spots, master bedroom and kitchen, below. This project offers a powerful prototype for tropical, residential architecture.
